Hi all,

I respectfully disagree with those who feel you don't need to study for
recertification.
I think we *all* (Cathy as well... hahaha) need to study *all the time*.
By the time you think you know it all, you're on the wrong track, in my
opinion.
And excluding some of us from the examination is not right.
Lactation has so many specialties and areas; you may be an expert on one but
not necessarily on the other.
There is always so much to learn, even if not all of that gets asked at the
exam.
But even so... little things you don't always use in daily practice may be
asked about.
Refreshing that for the exam is a good way, in my view, of urging yourself
to sit down again.
It will be another big number of years before I have to sit again (certified
in 2008), so I'm not worrying yet. ;o)
I'm sure that by that time I will study again, though, even if it were only
to improve my own score! :-))

Bye,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands

Subject: [LACTNET] Recertification exam

I will be taking the exam to recert for my 10 year and someone asked me if I
was planning to study. I said that if I couldn't pass it without studying
after being an LC for 16 years I didn't deserve to call myself an IBCLC. For
those of you that have recerted by exam before - am I being naïve or
practical? I am an RN in a hospital setting and see oupt's as well as inpt's
and run a breastfeeding support group (the last two give me experience with
the older baby).

Andrea Tran RN, IBCLC
