Karleen reports from PlusNews Global:
<<Previous guidelines recommended that ARVs be provided to HIV-positive
pregnant women only in the third trimester (beginning at 28 weeks). The new
guidelines encourage HIV-positive mothers taking ARVs to exclusively
breastfeed their infants for the first twelve months of life. >>
However, the actual WHO guidelines state:
<<WHO now recommends that breastfeeding continue until the infant is 12
months of age, provided the HIV-positive mother or baby is taking ARVs during
that period. This will reduce the risk of HIV transmission and improve the
infant's chance of survival.>>
I want to point out that it is important to go to the original source when
quoting. I was curious about the "exclusively breastfeed their infants
for the first 12 months of life" because EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding means
feeding the baby nothing else -- and that flies in the face of earlier WHO recos
of starting solid foods between 4 to 6 months....
And yes, WHO says that breastfeeding continue until the infant is 12
months of age -- not "exclusive" breastfeeding.
I don't want people to think that babies should not start solid foods at
the appropriate time.
None the less, this is huge!! Prior to this babies couldn't receive
anything else at all --as soon as they did, presumably when they started solid
foods, breastfeeding had to be stopped. So this is amazing....
