I have a pt who has had a c-section today for severe pre eclampsia. The newborn is 26 weeks, but holding his own. This lady wants to breastfeed, has breastfed previously, and has started to pump. My question concerns her being on phenobarbital to prevent seizures for the past day, and probably for the next 24 hours. My question is: how long after her last dose of phenobarb will her breastmilk be ok for ingestion by a severely premature infant? She wants to establish a supply for when the baby is ready for feedings, right now the baby is on IV fluids.
Hales puts it at L3, and talks about long half life. Does anyone have any experience with this or know where to go to ask?
Thanks,
Lisa Paladino RNC CNM CLC
