Hi all
Donor human milk is not infant formula but it can be used as if it is. This
study from Spain found that although the existence of a human milk bank
reduced infants exposure to infant formula (although it is not mentioned in
the article, I am betting that all these kids were exposed to cows milk via
the use of the deceptively named 'human milk fortifier') and enabled earlier
initiation of enteral feeding amongst VLBW babies, it had NO EFFECT on the
proportion of infants who left the NICU exclusively breastfeeding. This
means that although a milk bank is 'a good thing' in that it reduces
infants' exposure to infant formula, it does nothing to improve
breastfeeding outcomes. The danger with the establishment of milk banks is
that the involvement of mothers in the provision of human milk will be
forgotten. Effective support for the establishment of BREASTFEEDING must be
part of any human milk banking project - because every baby is entitled to
his/her Mother's Own Milk.
