There's also a great article by Donna Karl et al in MCN - The Perinatal
Nurse as Attacher. Really talks about the sort of change we want to see in
our patients and how we can effect it. Not just for breastfeeders - but if
it's all about the relationship (!) maybe the second or third baby will
nurse....
One of the big problems with lactation conferences from my point of view as
a LLLL who became an IBCLC who became a nurse -- too often it's the
out-of-hospital LC's telling nurses how "they" ought to do it. An LC who has
never been under the gun to get "eyes and thighs and prints" done so the
next shift won't kill her, is not going to understand some of the
frustrations.
In addition - we like to learn with our peers. After all, how many MD's do
we get at our lactation conferences? Not many. They like to go to the ABM
conferences (I'm assuming that - I've never been to one because I'm an RN
and an IBCLC!)
I do have a bit of a commercial interest here as one of the reasons I
started speaking for a healthcare education company was because I thought I
could talk to nurses. I've been well-received. (By nurses and IBCLCs -
thanks friends!)
And I agree - go for the people that WILL change. We are starting to see a
great changing of the guard in obstetrical nursing - all the old gals that
started in the 1960s and 1970's are getting ready to retire. Bring on the
newbies and teach them the new ways - they all love evidence based
practice!!!
