At my local hospital, Duramorph is also used. Women itch like crazy,
Benadryl given first, then Nubain. Sometimes we can get in first feeding before
the itching gets intense. Our goal is first feeding within the second hour
of birth after an uncomplicated C/S. One babe was nursing 59 min after
birth, and my grandson was nursing 65 min after birth!
An "On-Q" catheter which is then connected to a pre-loaded ball which
delivers fentanyl is placed into the incision area, and this delivers good pain
control for 2-3 days post-op. Of course most women get Toradol (Ketorolac
which is an NSAID-like med) IV every 8 hours for 24 hours, and they can
also get Percocet or Vicodin by mouth as needed. Lots of babies who hardly
ever nurse 6-8X in the first 24 hours, but they sure get a lot of skin-to-skin
contact with mom most of the time.
