Good morning all,
Regardless of the setting I’m wondering if by naming the room using words
like pumping/expressing etc we are reinforcing the concept of this being the
only way we can parent children in the workplace. The name excludes the
presence of babies and subtly supports the view that child care need not be
integrated at any level within the workplace-because look! We have a pumping
room!
Feeding room, or infant care room I think encompasses a range of possible
activities, breast expression included, and subtly makes a statement that it
may be possible to change a baby’s nappy there, or feed and hold a baby.
With those accommodations in place, might it even be possible to bring the
baby into work, for a lunchtime? Or a day or two, or a week, or even a few
months?
Clearly the concept of keeping babies and mums together in a workplace is
more appropriate in some settings than others, but a name and provision for
some other aspects of parenting may just initiate a change in attitudes to
try a new paradigm.
