Usually I spend time "lurking" and enjoying all the great information but
really feel the need to chime in. In my practice I see all newborns for
post-hospital follow-up. Most of our population is breastfeeding but there
are formula-feeders also. I need to take care of everyone so I never
introduce my self as the "lactation consult" to formula families but the
"newborn and feeding specialist." If I can't help with formula issues I
have no business seeing those patients. I recently had to write up some
formula-feeding handouts for use in the hospital to ensure safe formula
practice and the hospital LC's were appalled and didn't think they would
have time to spend with bottle-feeding families. Our management is on the
side of taking care of ALL our families. Because the majority of our moms
are employed outside the home I need to be able to help them combine
breast and bottle as effortlessly as possible.
I am reading a really great book right now "Balancing Breast and Bottle"
by Amy Peterson and Mindy Harmer. No financial interest in recommending it
but it is excellent. My favorite part is a really gentle baby-friendly way
of introducing the bottle. Great info!
The other book recommendation I would like to make is "Breastfeeding with
Comfort and Joy" by Laura Keegan. No financial interest here either.
This beautifully written book with some of the best BF pictures I have
seen for positioning, etc is so positive and supportive of moms. One of
the things she talks about is the many roadblocks society puts in the way
of BF moms - bad advice, unhelpful family support, etc. When I finished
the book I wanted to give a copy to all of my BF moms!
Happy New Year,
