Thank you, Karleen.
Do you know to whom one should turn, in case one wants to file a complaint?
(Yes, Liz, if Karleen doesn't know, I will turn to Unicef! hahaha)
I'm awaiting a response from the BFHI-body to my question whether the
BFHI-authorities are informed about this and if they are okay with it.
I reckon this question might be considered 'agressive' or 'threatening' by
the management; I was fully aware of the rather 'explosive' weight of the
question.
I do think, though, that I have the right (duty!) to pose the question and
that it can only be considered agressive when the answer is 'no'.
I hate to be in this position so often; I wish those who are supposed to
lead the way, would be more thoroughly convinced of the importance of the
Ten Steps and the WHO-code...
Yesterday, we discussed the need of worldwide solidarity and the role model
function of industrialized countries.
Some of us emphasized a few times, like I did last week in a five page
article for my colleagues, that the WHO-code is NOT a choice menu, from
which you can pick what you like.
I felt really sad, when people made a plea for realizing the we are a Dutch
organisation and should translate the WHO-code to the Dutch situation...
:-((
A colleague argued that if it is okay to admit a code-violating pump
manufacturer, you can also admit a formula manufacturer advertising feeding
tubes. A fast downward slope.
"People use bottles here, so we don't serve our target group well, if we
don't put ads in our magazine. We need to inform them."
Why is is so diffucult to understand that the WHO-code is about marketing
AND that marketing and information are two totally different things...?! :-(
Is it okay to rob a bank, if you have donated a lot of money to charity...?

Warmly,

Marianne Vanderveen IBCLC, Netherlands (agreeing with Karleen's statement
about the M-conference)
