It is excellent, I agree, that we have an official and unequivocal
governmental endorsement of breastfeeding. There have been statements
like this before, but this is the strongest.
It is already of great use in local policy forming and alliance-fostering.
However, the on-the-ground knowledge of how breastfeeding women are
truly supported, with good information and recognition of how to fix
things when they are not right, is not good in the UK. There are many
HCPs who think they support breastfeeding, and indeed would be
horrified if it was suggested to them that they actually don't
support it. Pamela is right - they believe that formula is ok, and
that 'too much support' for breastfeeding is somehow not a good thing
for women who use formula. Of course this is naive, but it is a
deeply ingrained attitude that needs to change.
