Re loud clicking while breastfeeding: Someone should assess this baby for a
sub-mucosal cleft. Babies that have this make a "Maggie Simpson on a
pacifier" noise--learned this at an ILCA conference in Acapulco, or maybe
Chicago. Anyway, that's exactly how it was described and I've since seen it. What
you or pedi will see when looking in the mouth with a light is either an
absent uvula or a v cleft where the uvula should be. I don't believe there
is a real fix for this. These babies have a good mouth seal on the breast
but lose suction because of the weakness of the soft palate. Some babies can
nurse ok with this--others have more difficulties. Regardless of what this
baby's issue is if the nipple shield is making feeding more comfortable for
this little one then I would use it. And I agree with Nicki--this baby
needs a full assessment by a specialist or pedi ENT.
Now I'm remembering that one of my colleagues when I worked at Stanford
picked this up on a baby and I think ENT did a procedure. I could get more
info re procedure if anyone wants it. And what alerted her was the "Maggie
Simpson clicking noise.
