The discourse here on Lactnet has been very interesting. I have been vexed
by this topic for more than a few years, In my home visits with moms, I get
asked ALL the time "When will be baby get to the good hindmilk?" (as though
the stuff that came in the first part of the feed is somehow less good).
I've tried explaining the biology ... I've tried using different wording ...
I've tried asking mom to Embrace Her Milk. None of it seemed persuasive.
I finally stumbled on a rather crude analogy -- which, frankly, has been the
one the moms "get" the best. I tell her: "Look, it's all one milk. Have
you ever gone pee on after a really hot day, and realized it was darker and
smellier? It is because you were sweating a lot ... and extra moisture went
to your skin instead of your bladder. The sodium content of your pee on the
hot day is different than on a cool day ... but you'd agree with me that it
is always pee, right?"
For some reason, this always reassures the mom. Perhaps because we pee all
day, every day, it is one life experience with which Mom can identify.
(N.B.: I always have the urge to go wash my hands, however, after using
that anaogy ....)
