Aloha Lactnetters,
This is my first post and I hope you can help my patient and I.
I have a mother who is breastfeeding a 23 month old daughter. She is divorced and has created a settlement with the father for 50/50 custody. The mother is a flight attendant and the father is a firefighter. Their schedules are all over the monthly calendar and it has been hard to arrange a schedule to allow the mother to have a day before and after (per her present custody agreement) her 2 day flight schedules. She is gone 10 days per month or 5 x per month. She expresses milk while away from the baby.
She is presently to see a Mediator at the request of the Father, to revisit the custody agreement to delete the before and after days around her 2 day trips away.
She wonders if there is any precedence in legal system, family court or family mediation within the USA to protect the rights of mothers and their breastfeeding children.
I will look forward to your responses.
Pat Bilyk, RN, MPH, MSN, IBCLC
