Hi Debbie,
I'm sure someone with more experience (like Cathy Genna herself!) will
respond soon. But I just wanted to say, I've known several babies
(including one of my own) who had sub-mucosal tongue-ties. (cf. p. 230
in the book) It looks like there is no frenulum at all, but really it
is hiding under the mucosa. One of these babies could even stick his
tongue out (briefly), but if you looked from above, there was a large
"dimple" in the middle of his tongue where the frenulum was holding it
down. My own baby's tongue also looked "normal" at first glance, in
that there was no visible frenulum, but she caused me unbelievable
pain and shredded my nipples within 12 hours of her easy, unmedicated
homebirth.
Based on the mother's experience and your evaluation of the baby's
suck, it would probably be worthwhile to pursue this line of inquiry.
