I come across this every day and I often tell mothers the true story of a 4
friends eating pizzas together. One friend had her pizza served 20 minutes
before the rest. When the other 3 had completely finished their pizzas -
the one who started first had only eaten one and a half slices! She is a
slow eater. She eats as much as the others - it just takes her longer.
It's neither right nor wrong. I have watched several babies at the breast
on day 2 - and the MER was only elicited after 15 to 20 minutes. Just when
I was thinking maybe we had a problem here! I have also seen babies have a
feast of colostrum on day one - within 2 minutes! The numbers game can be
dangerous - mothers and staff members watch the clock and not the baby's
behaviour at the breast. (Jack Newman has a good article on this topic).
