Dear Friends:
A local swim club has some, shall we say, interesting rules for
breastfeeding mothers. I've cut and pasted those comments from a letter
written to me by a nursing mother:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
""Breast Feeding: Mothers who wish to breast feed their infants are
encouraged to do so in the chairs surrounding any of the pools, but may not
sit on the steps or edges of the pools. We also request that a cover be
used when nursing."
The president of the board told me that the rule was written because the
pool has had problems in the past with cryptosporidium and other bacteria
and had to close down, so they feel it is unhygienic to have nursing babies
so close to the pool. He said that the cover is a request, not a
requirement, because some people complained."
=============================================================================================
Nikki again: I am writing to request any information that anyone might have
about swimming pools and breastfeeding. It doesn't make any sense to me if a
mother nurses in a chair surrounding the pool, or while sitting on the edge
of the pool. Any germs would be on her skin and her hair.
Any and ideas and information is welcomed.
warmly,
Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
