Subject line was Prolacta with questions about the Portland, OR news item.

Sorry for any confusion--which we have been dealing with here since that incorrect media piece which is bouncing all over the place and being picked up by bloggers, etc.

Correct info: The Northwest Mothers Milk Bank is a HMBANA Developing Milk Bank (we're not yet collecting or processing as we are still in the fund raising stage). We have no connection with Prolacta.

We have facilitated the opening of three donor depots in the Portland area which directly send pre-screened donor milk (with the pre-screening done my a HMBANA milk bank) to the San Jose and Denver HMBANA milk banks. This is to stimulate donor awareness in the NW, as well as being a supply channel for HMBANA banks, as we work to open our facility.

Now to the news item linked in Jodine's post: Most of that info is incorrect: WHO has not contacted Adventist nor HMBANA (as of this writing) for donor milk. We have three donor depots in Portland area, not one. Adventist is not a collection point for milk donations to Haiti. Adventist Medical Center is not a milk bank. Prospective donor moms are not pre-screened by HMBANA, but they are pre-screened by the individual HMBANA milk banks which are listed on the HMBANA web site. The HMBANA number listed in the article is actually the San Jose, CA milk bank number (and that director said she had 75 phone messages today!).

So please do not distribute this news link or any of the incorrect info.

What you can do is help by distributing the HMBANA's statement below on Haiti which will soon be posted on www.hmbana.org

 There are so many moms who want to help other moms and babies in this terrible emergency situation in Haiti.
  Please help by disseminating the correct information to them.
      Thanks,
          June

HMBANA Statement: Situation in Haiti

The Human Milk Banking Association of North American (HMBANA) is
saddened by the disastrous earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12,
2010. Our thoughts and prayers reach out to this country that now has
lost so much.

Many areas have no water, electricity, housing or health care
facilities. Recognizing the life saving importance of breastfeeding of
infants and young children in this situation, we speak in support of
protection and support of Haitian breastfeeding women. Humanitarian
efforts must continue to support the health of the mothers and their
ability to breast feed in order to protect that of the young children.

To help survivors of the Haitian earthquake please donate money to the
following agencies:

* UNICEF (1-800-4UNICEF)
* Direct Relief International
* Yele Haiti
* Partners in Health
* Red Cross
* World Food Programme
* Mercy Corps (1-888-256-1900)
* Save the Children
* Lambi Fund
* Doctors Without Borders
* The International Rescue Committee
* Care

The following organizations are accepting SMS donations in the US only:

* SMS text " HAITI " to 90999 to donate $10 to Red Cross relief
efforts
* SMS text "YELE" to 501501 to Donate $5 to Yele Haiti 's Earthquake
Relief efforts

In order to support HMBANA to be prepared to provide donor milk if
UNICEF, the Red Cross, WHO or other international organization involved
on the front lines were to contact us please call your nearest HMBANA
bank(found at www.HMBANA .org) and become a donor so that we will have the
needed processed donor milk.

Thank you!

~ The Board of Directors and Staff of HMBANA

Subject: Re: Prolacta

I just found this news item from Portland Oregon

http://www.salem-news.com/articles/january152010/breastmilk.php

"(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The World Health Organization and Adventist Medical
Center are asking for human breast milk donations to help babies of the
Haiti quake, and a Portland, Oregon group is the connection point for those
who can help[1]...."

Please go and read the entire article. The Adventist Medical Centre looks
like it's an HMBANA milk bank, part of the Northwest Mother's Milk Bank,
which is listed as developing on HMBANA's page.
