Subject: Re: Healthy Sleep Habits, Dr Marc Weissbluth

“Pat, can you explain to the librarian how dangerous this book can be?”))

Unfortunately the librarian’s response might include the words “freedom of
speech” and/or “press.”

I was at my library yesterday (searching for sleep training books to check
out and then accidently lose…just kidding, wish I wasn’t kidding) and as I
was at the counter, a woman brought back a book she’d previously gotten for
her child(ren), to show the librarian that it contained pictures of the
Giant breastfeeding her 6 children, calling it “very interesting” as “the
Giant was very well endowed…” I immediately spoke up, “oh I want to see” and
looked at the cartoonish, children’s book-ish drawing of the yes,
large-breasted Giant, with one uncovered breast visible, nursing a child. I
said “hey, nothing wrong, she’s feeding her baby the way nature intended.”
The other mom said “yes, (nodded toward library patron’s own toddler) sees
me feeding the baby—“ (which I assumed meant breastfeeding the baby she was
lugging around in an infant carrier) “—but I just wanted to let you (nodded
toward librarian) know, since it’s just, an…interesting children’s book.”

…Uh-huh, so what’s the problem?!?!? Unfortunately, I don’t notify the
librarian of all the children’s books that I find offensive because they
show the babies in Berenstain Bears and Little Critter drinking from
bottles, or the books with *reptiles* like Franklin the turtle’s baby sister
drinking from bottles.

I’m sure pornography wouldn’t be allowed in the children’s section or
“parenting” section of the library, but unfortunately, detrimental/dangerous
detachment parenting practices like cry-it-out and scheduling feeds/sleep,
as well cartoon drawings showing *non-mammals* drinking (what, cow-milk?!)
from bottles, would continue to protected by freedom of speech.

Just venting,
