Hi Michelle
We tell all our mothers that they are encouraged to breastfeed. It
might be once a day that they need to either replace a feed with the PKU
formula or give a partial feed.
Suggest they ask the medical team how often the baby needs testing if
they breast feed or if they bottle feed. As I am sure both are monitored
possibly at different frequencies.

What advice would you give a mom (and grandmom) whose hearts are
breaking with the news that the otherwise healthy infant had a positive
PKU test?
They are being told everything must be measured so the baby cannot go
to the breast. Or they can feed the newborn 2 oz of Pku formula, then
put the baby to breast--when obviously the baby would not take the
breast or might take it then vomit from the overload of milk...
