Our kids are creative when they come across something new! My son at age
four would say things like, "50 plus 60 must be 110 because 60 is 10 more
than 50 and 50 plus 50 is 100." So when he went to kindergarten they gave
him a written test to see what his math skills were. (We did things in our
heads but didn't bother to give him formal written training about numbers --
what did we know??)
When they asked him what the plus sign was, it was red. He answered in a
very dignified manner, "That is the international symbol for the Red Cross."
The teacher was beside herself.
It was pretty much the end of his math prodigy career...
