Dear all,
I need to ask again about nipple shields.
I know that this topic had been discussed many times, and I think I read
most of the comments in the archives (even if I admit I may have missed
some important ones), but I still have unanswered questions.
How can a nipple shield help correct the mismatch between large nipple
and small infant mouth?
As far as I understand, the shield must fit comfortably on the nipple
(and small shields are very difficult to apply anyway). If this must be,
how can it help the baby with a small mouth to latch properly? if the
shield is large in order to accomodate a large nipple, how can the baby
latch properly beyond the shaft?
How does it work the idea of the nipple shield aiding babies with weak
suction to extract milk from the breast?
I have read the idea that the negative pressure inside the shield tip
help extract milk. I am not sure how this works: I cannot see any
negative pressure in the shield tip, unless it is the mouth of the baby
to create and maintain it....
Can you give me any suggestion to understand these issue better, please?
Thank you,
Micaela
