There is a way that mother can nurse a baby with PKU with guidance. There is a certain amount of PKU formula to be taken and then baby can nurse between feedings. A pediatric metabolic dietitian can work with the mother on this. Possibly the mom could pump her breasts first and attach an SNS to the breast containing the PKU formula. I think a ped R.D. along with an IBCLC would be a great team to help this family. Would need to be in a pediatric medical center for these resources.
