HELP!
I have a mom with a 4 week old baby. Baby was prem, (32 wks), very
jaundiced, on Bili lights for a week, wouldn't nurse.
Baby was supplemented with formula and glucose first week then just formula.
Mom didn't come to me 'till day 4 for a breast pump, so had little breast
stimulation, never got engorged. Tho I told her to pump every two hours or
so, she didn't until week 2.5. She has virtually no milk supply. She saw
good friend Karen and Karen saw no milk going from mom to baby (did a weight
check). Mom and Dad now finger feed instead of bottle feed. Baby nurses 4-5
times a day 20 min. then is supplemented after. They are now trying SNS to
help stimulate baby to nurse better, and hopefully to increase milk supply.
Karen is concerned that mom may not have glandular tissue needed to make
enough milk for baby. Mom is frustrated, angry and resentful towards body
for "failing" her. (understandable) She is also frustrated with baby for
nursing probs. She is a "control" person, and is trying to keep control over
entire situation, (impossible) and is very testy (understatement) when told
to try and relax. She is very stressed and is concerned that she will fail
at BF. She feels that by using the SNS she has no breasts.
I think that if she knew that there were other women who supplemented at
breast with the SNS, she might relax about it and focus more on the nurturing
of baby at the breast rather than HOW baby is being fed at the breast.
So I guess my question is, (finally) do any of you have any stories of other
women going through a similar situation? Mom not able to produce enough milk
so supplements with SNS to continue a close, nurturing relationship with
baby.
Any stories would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance!
Janet
