I am trying to understand how this is a natural product? Gentian violet is NOT a natural product by any stretch of the imagination! I never use it for thrush. I also never use lanolin--I think it causes more problems than it solves. While a product containing organic olive oil might be fine--I do not tell women to use olive oil, since so much of the olive oil on the market is cut with other oils. Love calendula and castor oil, but coconut oil is much better for this purpose, as it is safer for baby to ingest. Frankly, I would just use the coconut oil and the calendula and be done with it. Does anyone have info for a manufacturer--could not find one on-line and I would sure like to voice my concern about misleading folks into thinking GV is natural!

I make a GV nipple ointment based on lanolin and plant oil for use on nipples
and babybottoms with thrush. For sore nipples without thrush I make an ointment
of pure lanolin or lanolin and plantoil with a drop of calendula. Feedback from
clients is mainly very positive. The ointment however is not meant to be put
iside a mouth, so I have moms apply it in between or after feedings and treat
thrush in baby's mouth with GV 0,5-1% in water.

Has anyone had any experience with this? Or a version similar? It appears
to be something manufactured locally. I have some concerns about the castor
oil taken internally.... and allergic sensitization via the calendula and
chamillia.
I do not in any way claim to have 'expert' knowledge of herbs/creams so
would appreciate input from those who do.
The manufacturer says "The ingredients for the Nurple breast cream include
Gentian violet, lanolin, olive oil, castor oil, calendula and chamomillia.
It does have beeswax. In our formulation process, we refrain from using any
petroleum based products (mineral oil, paraffin) and synthetics
(polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol). We subscribe to our motto: vis
curatio intentio which translates to"healing as nature intended". Materials
used are natural sourced and manipulation of the product with heat, pressure
and physical refining are minimized. We trust that in nature, there are
enzymes that are present which forms the matrix for natural healing.
Ingredient list for Nurple Nipple Ointment:
Gentian Violet: antifungal agent, is currently at 1%, but there was a
request from an LC if we can make a half percent version. This is not a
problem and can be done as ordered. I would most likely add a half percent
of Grapefruit Seed Extract to this version, so it will have the
antimicrobial, antiviral, antifungal benefits of the Grapefruit Seed
Extract.
Lanolin: used as the base, as this reduces cracking and repairs the nipple.
Castor Oil is beneficial for drawing the infection to the surface. Is is
shown to stimulate drainage and flow of fluids. We recommend Castor Oil
packs for plugged ducts and it works well. We use cold pressed castor oil.
Olive Oil is added to supplement the healing of cracked nipples. Organic
Extra virgin olive oil is used.
Calendula Officinalis has an anti-inflammatory effect and helps pain,
inflammation and redness.
Chamomillia has a cooling effect on inflammation and also helps pain of the
infected nipple. When taken internally, it has a calming effect on the baby
and is used in homeopathic teething formulations for pain and upsetness.
The beeswax we use is organic unbleached beeswax. It is added as a firming
agent.
........The potency of Purple Nurple is the same (1%) but reduces the
staining by 90% and contact time with the mucosa is increased because of the
natural adherence of the lanolin. The convenience of applying it to the
mother's nipple stops the re-infection cycle, treating mother's nipple and
baby's mouth at the same time.
To answer your question, it should be erquipotent to gentian Violet
Solution. It does not contain alcohol and it should be more effective."
