Jessica - I notice your signature block identifies you as a LLL Leader. If you are offering information to these parents as a LLL Leader, you may want to check and see what LLL's statement on wet-nursing is at the moment. This is a subject that you should be asking your Professional Liaison for assistance with to be sure that your response to this mother falls within the parameters of LLL's policies on this subject. I believe the LLL does not recommend wet-nursing (cross-nursing).
FYI, I have a friend who has been a surrogate three times and for one of her parents, she pumped for several months (4 I believe it was). My friend lives in TX and I think the babies' parents live in Chicago so it was shipped. All was at the parent's expense - they provided the pump and paid for the shipping. It's really not much different than a mother who would be pumping to donation to a milk bank - she pumps and freezes the milk and the shipping etc. is taken care of by the entity it's going to. She's just "donating" directly to the parents. My friend had it written into her contract with some careful wording that didn't hold her to the 4 month commitment if it was too difficult physically or emotionally. I believe that the pumping was done for the first set of parents she was a surrogate for and so she didn't know how she would feel about pumping for that long.
