Dear Friends:

Phyllis Adamson describes what I have seen here in my City: mothers are not
permitted to carry their babies in arms. "Liability/risk management" issues.

How in the world can a mother be "empowered" (a buzz word here in health
education circles) to be a mother if the underlying scary message is that
carrying your own born baby is dangerous?

Add that to the battering that babies receive in US hospitals (induction,
pitocin, operative delivery), the separation after birth, and the barriers
(i.e. routine postpartum, non-evidenced based practices) to breastfeeding
and one can see how disturbed we are as a nation.

Any other mammal would kill her baby after this treatment. In the States,
babies just get stuck in car seats (I've read of babies in car seats so long
they develop contractures), plugged with pacifiers, and bottle-fed while the
mother watches her baby via video monitor from another room. What sort of
foundation for healthy relationship and loving is that??

grrrr!!
