regarding Katherine's question below:

"How often are you all seeing non-problematic ankyloglossia?

I've always assumed it's always a problem to some degree but I realize that
could be because I *only* have contact with moms who are having problems -
generally major problems. Many of you see moms routinely in the hospital
before problems have occured."

I have seen several moms with this issue since beginning private practice in late 2009. Of the babies I recommended for further evaluation, all pediatricians concurred with my diagnosis and all but one of the mothers chose to have the problem addressed surgically. The dissenting mom reported in our final phonecall that she felt the problem was resolving as her baby grew--her nipple pain and injuries were almost gone and baby was gaining well.

On a personal note, my son has posterior type 4 and nursing him was a long and difficult journey. (well worth it, of course!). He is now 10 1/2 years old (weaned at age 4) and begins orthodontic treatment this spring. His speech articulation has always been fine, however he does have other learning disabilities (dyslexia/dysgrapha). Anyone else seeing these types of outcome in older tongue-tied kids? (orthodontia is a given--I am seeking information on learning differences necessitating intervention. )

very kindly,
Leslie Cree IBCLC
