Dear Friends:
There are many ways to avoid conflict of interest. Liz Brooks has mentioned
some.
When I was selling pumps, I sold all brands (as long as they were decent) so
that I wasn't attached to any one brand.
When I thought about it, I realized that I was renting pumps to my lactation
clients less than 5% of the time and then only as a major convenience to the
mom. How would it help a mother just home after a cesarean section to go
exploring her neighborhood to find a pump when I had one in my car? As my
rates were always on the lowest side of what was in my region, she wouldn't
have saved anything by shopping. (This was my personal smell test.)
Now that the whole pump depot thing has changed for us in private practice,
at least in the States, I don't carry any pumps. If there is a small piece
of equipment (a feeding tube or a nipple shield) needed, I give it to her.
warmly,
