I have a question re: two techniques that people use for soreness on
nipples/breasts.

If one is going to advise a mom to use salt water soaks, does it matter if
the salt is iodized, or not? I have been recommending sea salt, 1/4 tsp to
one cup of water, boiled and cooled. I thought iodine was an issue. Also,
the soaking process should not be lengthy, only a few minutes,...is this
correct?

Additionally, does anyone recommend using ice cubes on sore nipples? I
think this used to be recommended years ago, but ice can take away the
feedback of pain as an indicator of bad latch, for instance....so I do not
recommend using ice cubes on sore nipples, but instead recommend that one
get the latch fixed, and perhaps use triple nipple APNO cream as well. Does
anyone have any references on either the salt water or the ice use?

Thanks and happy holidays! Kathleen Bruce RN IBCLC
