Dear friends,
Perhaps it is too early on a Saturday morning that I don't grasp it, but why should a mom wash her *breasts* before breastfeeding in order to prevent flu colonization in her child? Is she hanging them out in front of flu infected sneezers to get covered in virusses? Are healthcare professionals handling them with unwashed hands after coughing and sneezing?

Warmly,

Gonneke, IBCLC, retired LLLL, MOM, puzzled in southern Netherlands

The AAP "advice" which included "wash the breast before feeds" also caught my attention, though as Judy stated, I would much rather see that happen than separating mom and baby unnecessarily.  In posting the AAP link, I was hoping to hear from someone that the CDC had updated their recommendations.  The whole notion of 'just pump the milk' in the first 48 hours is scary to me when I spend so much time preaching the value of skin to skin contact and early/frequent nursing! I do not like for non-lactation folks to be making such an uniformed decision.
