Just to update you, my little guy (almost 4 months old, 11 lbs - 7lbs at birth) has now been put on a hypoallergenic formula by the pediatrician. His stools turned mucosy and green and mom took him to the doctor. She is still pumping as much as possible (getting about 26 ounces in 24 hours with a hand pump!). He will be seeing a g. i. doctor next week because they are suspecting that he is "allergic to the breastmilk." I feel like it is now out of my hands, but I'm still speaking to the mom frequently as she needs support. It will be interesting to see how much he gains on the formula. I would imagine if it is a true g. i. disorder, he won't gain much.
