My opinion is that mom should be the one to take any probiotics. If her 
gut flora is altered, she might have a slightly leaky gut. I agree that 
there are many possible interpretations for the infant's behavior, and a 
full lactation assessment is in order before exposing the baby to some 
foreign substance.

Human milk is  supposed to be the only thing ingested by infants from 
birth to 6 months or so. Probiotics, prebiotics and functional foods are 
becoming big business, so there is going to be increased pressure on 
moms to use these for their babies.

So far the research on pro and pre biotics for babies does not show them 
to be very helpful. There are a few studies with potentially positive 
results, but those are small and the populations are not otherwise 
exclusively breastfed babies, and the benefits are small.
