Using Laid Back Breastfeeding (biological nurturing) positions where mom
reclines and the baby lays on mom with full ventral contact would be
appropriate. Mom's arm acts as a guardrail during feeding, rather than
having to hold or push baby to the breast.
Activities of increased risk for a baby with OI include dressing (when
limbs are being manipulated out of sleeves and pants legs) and
positioning. Breastfeeding is usually not a danger, and optimal bone
mineralization from breastfeeding can be helpful. I know one little 4
year old darling with OI who has had only one fracture in her life so
far. Breastfeeding went well with no special interventions.
I bet this babies prematurity will be more of an issue for breastfeeding
than the OI.
