A colleague and I are currently offering support and information to 2
women whose infants have a condition neither of us has dealt with
before. Odd that both cases came into our practice independently a few
weeks apart. Both have received a diagnosis of cerebellar hypoplasia.
Infant 1 is a six month old with Trisomy 17 mosaicism, severe failure to
thrive (app. 3 pound weight gain over 6 months), difficulty
bottle-feeding without aspirating, fair competence at the breast (but no
weight gain), pumps enough to meet pediatrician’s requirements, and baby
happy and responsive to mom and developing better than we might have
expected. Baby was totally breastfed to 5 months, but due to FTT was
recently started on a supplementation routine of pump, HMF added, and
bottle feed with some breastfeeding allowed. There hasn’t been time for
any improvement in weight gain to be noted. We are concerned about
aspiration and also about how much the breastfeeding has meant to his
development and interpersonal interactions. Most babies with this
condition are formula fed and are also reported to have greater
developmental difficulties than this baby exhibits. The bottle feeding
has adversely affected some aspects of the mother/baby relationship.
Infant 2 was prenatally diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia and NTD.
Infant is app. 2 weeks old and was immediately transferred to
aspecialized center 150 miles away. Mother is pumping but planned to
breastfeed. Does anyone have any experience with this condition?
