I am still wondering what sweet ease is doing to the baby's glucose levels. We got rid of the 5% glucose water, and don't usually do a circumcision on the first day, but a couple of RNs are sometimes putting sweet ease on mom's nipples to entice the baby to latch when they are not latching (I know, I know! They don't realize this is a "supplement"). I'm wondering how much of the 24% solution it takes to raise the baby's sugar levels and if there is a spike and drop in the baby's blood, which I would think cause problems. Yes, there is only a small amount in each container, but it's got to be a problem. I'm sure if Joint Commission asks, the RNs would not think that they are "supplementing" the baby. I'm working on the education of the RNs, but I don't have the research to back my suspicions.
