It is one of my slightly tongue-in-cheek theories that the underlying (and perhaps principal) purpose of breastfeeding-benefits/breastmilk-ingredient type research is to help formula companies figure out what they want to genetically engineer next in order to add it to their formulas. Call me cynical but that's why your discovery about that research team doesn't surprise me. I've long since let go of the notion that people are studying the miracles of breastmilk out of either admiration or curiosity. No - such research is going to make someone somewhere some money - usually a formula/pharmaceutical company....
