"So -- when a bottle works LESS like a breast or MORE like a breast - we
can't discuss that aspect either?'
My answer would be, 'Show me the evidence.' I do not believe, for even an
instant that any bottle works any more like a breast than any other. If
there is evidence, perhaps from an ultrasound study that measured the
pressures in infants' mouths, show me.
The claim that one bottle works more like a breast than others is a
marketing claim designed to convince mothers and breastfeeding professionals
to prefer one brand over another. It is a device used to position a teat as
the next best thing to a mothers' breast. There is no evidence that I am
aware of to support this sort of claim and IBCLCs have no place perpetuating
such a myth.
There may be reasons to choose one teat over others (and I can see no
problem with discussing those). However, those reasons will not include
'because it is more like a breast' (because that is a marketing claim).
