Dear Friends:
If the mother desired to breastfeed, she should have her milk expressed
regularly, even if she is in a coma or is dealing with issues that any of
us might consider a barrier. That way, when she wakes up, she will know she
has had a chance no matter what.
One story I heard was of a mother that was in a coma for a while after
delivery, and her family came in often to pump for her. Along with her
rehabilitation, she got to have a nursing relationship. Humans are so
variable and anything is possible. I lost 1500 cc after delivery, and
made prodigious amounts of milk: nursing my own baby plus pumping once a day
for a friend with cancer and getting between 6 and 10 ounces (180-300 ml) at
that one morning pumping while nursing.
(I did go on to develop a sub-clinical Sheehan's and was healed by my
brilliant Chinese physician.)
