Question for Rachel: when you have a mom on Magnesium Sulfate and strong pain relievers that make mom sleep soundly; perhaps she has also had a cesarean, where does baby sleep?

We have reports of mom, usually it's a large woman, who fell asleep with babe on her chest, but she was in such a deep sleep due to meds or just being tired from her hard work, that baby reportedly fell off mom and onto the floor. That sends babe to NICU for observation and testing and strong warnings to mother to never ever sleep with her baby.

Commonly we have babe in the Nursery as a "boarder baby" until mother is well enough to assume care of the babe herself.

Aside: even if mom is healthy, gave birth vaginally, and babe is in couplet care, we don't allow her to carry her own babe in arms more than a couple of steps. Actually NO ONE (except MDs and RNs) is allowed to walk around with the baby in arms inside the hospital. It's a Risk Management / Liability issue in the USA.

How does that compare to Norway, and other places in the world?

Phyllis
