As with every intervention, there are apropriate uses and there are inappropriate ones. I never suggets ice to sore nipples across the board, however, there is one situation where i have found it helpful for some moms. When she has damaged nipples and the latch has been "fixed", I find that there may be a little residual tenderness the first few sucks until the nipples are healed. When mom is a little hesitant to let baby latch quickly, it may keep baby from achieving the most effective latch. If she states that there is just a little discomfort the first few sucks and then feels fine, she sees good jaw action and hears swallows, it may be this "residual while healing" soreness. I mention that ice will dull the nerve endings for a few moments and may hepo get her past those first few sucks. Whether it really does or not, it seems to help her relax enough to allow baby to get a full latch. Of course, I remind her that a biting or pinching
feeling, fully shape after baby releases, or discomfort past those first few sucks may warrant a "relatch".
