My middle child was also a baby who would only nurse with
me laying down and her facing down on top. She wasn't a
comfort nurser at a young age and would only nurse every
4-5 hours so she got a lot of milk very quickly, her
preference for a long time. I don't remember what age
this stopped but as she got older she started to comfort
nurse and nursed until 3. When we would go places she
would refuse to nurse and I wound up with many plugged
ducts / breast infections.
I was intrigued by the person who commented this often
starts with older babies in the distractible stage. I
wonder if some of the nursing strikes we hear of or the
moms we hear of who weaned a baby at 5 or 6 mo. because
they wouldn't nurse any more had tried nursing their
babies lying down or if they just assumed they wouldn't
nurse because they no longer would nurse in the cradle
hold? Just something interesting to think about next
time we get a nursing strike call.
