The Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Protocol 9 talks about the use of
galactatgogues (spelling? sorry) to augment maternal milk supply. It
does discuss many different herbal and prescription medications
including their side effects and dosage. It does state domperidone is
not FDA approved in the US, but also gives more information on it also.
I give this handout to mothers at times who have low milk supply
(usually pumping for a preemie) and review the different things in the
protocol. Because Domperidone is on there I do discuss it but tell them
I am unable to give them information on how to get it - I do tell them
that if they take it they need to discuss it with the physician taking
care of the baby... I am at a loss as to what to do because for many of
these mothers we have done everything else... and they can't take Reglan
due to a history of depression and some OBs won't write for Reglan out
here... and doesn't Reglan have a black box warning now? It doesn't
make any sense to me why Domperidone isn't FDA approved here yet Reglan
is with so many more side effects. Do any other LCs discuss Domperidone
- I was taught I could talk about it but not give resources for it.
