Hi Nikki,
INDEED! What are we doing to ourselves. We are so "out of touch"
literally with ourselves
and those around us. Computers are great, I rely on them heavily and
experience withdrawal
to some degree in a hotel without one BUT personal relationships are
SO MUCH more important
to feel whole and connected. How are our poor babies to connect when
they have no model
for it. Did it all begin with those darn infant carseat/carriers? I
had a mom come in to the WIC
program this week. I saw her when her baby was 1week old, she brought
the baby into my
office in a carrier. Mom was/is only partitially bfing...another
story..but I expressed my opinion
of the carrier (ie:flat head syndrome etc.) I impressed on her how
important touch was and
that babies that are breastfed get lots of touch and to make sure
that if she was bottlefeeding
to do it in a way similar to breastfeeding as far as touching goes.
She came in this week,baby
is 2mo old, was throwing up on formula so mom is breastfeeding/pump
feeding more than she
originally planned, also she said "you noticed I carried the baby
in!". She is very proud of the
attention/touching that she does with the baby. It was so rewarding
to see her not just holding
the baby but caressing it as well. She may not be exclusively
breastfeeding but boy are they
connected. I think that's very important and she has reason to be
proud! Made my day.

Two staff from my WIC program were in your class last week. I'm so
glad they got to "meet"
you and learn from your teachings. Should make my life a little
easier at work. I told them
I was glad they got to hear it from someone other than myself for a
change. :-)

Subject: personal pondering about mothering the mother

Dear Friends:

I was teaching last week in Lewiston, Maine. (One of Maine's famous
culinary
treats is lobster, and I had the best lobster of my life there: sweet,
succulent and oh so good!)

What are we doing to ourselves?

warmly,
