I was fortunate enough, as were my client's, to have James McGovern to come speak to my mom's group 2 years ago. He is a psycologist who actually trained with Eric Erickon himself. He discussed stages one and two and provided nice handouts which I still use. He was wonderful and kind but didn't sugar coat anything. In speaking about separation he said that the babies are simply "devistated" when apart from the mother or whomever they perceive as their primary caregiver. He also said (reinforcing what I tell my moms) that you don't have to be a "perfect mom" or 100% all the time, you just need to be there. Lastly, a mom who was planning to go back to work at 3 months stated that she simply can't stay home and what wouls help her baby the most in transition of caregiving. he suggested that the caregiver she chooses be present with her and her baby on a regular basis for a period of time, so the baby gets accustomed to hearing an seeing the caregiver along with the mother.
But he is all about stay-at-home moms, attachment parenting, breastfeeding. He now speializes in couples counseling (wrote his masters thesis on "Love" when he was at Harvard)
