Dear Fellow Breastfeeding Supporters,
I wanted to join in on the list regarding the topics of breastpumps, teaching
breastfeeding and Medela.
I realize that we have come along way in our work to support our moms and
have a long way to go in our work. In my area, we have a lot of low income
moms that would rather pump their breasts and give their babies the best milk.
Some of them feel it takes too much time and committment to breastfeed. I
feel that is sad but I am not here to change their minds. I try to influence and
educate but I also want to support them in what their choices are. I want to
help them raise healthier children. If it means that I need to help them acquire
and use a breastpump to give their baby the immune plus that breastmilk gives
I will do so. I also teach these moms that don't think they want to breastfeed
or can breastfeed that colostrum is so precious and beneficial to their baby
that if the only time the baby gets it is after delivery it is beneficial.
I have had moms that have pumped and gave their baby breastmilk for the
first year of life but only breastfed while they were in the hospital 24 hrs.
I also have the moms that enjoy breastfeeding and do breastfeed for one to
two years or more.
In my hospital I do carry Medela pumps. I chose them, and I had the
opportunity to chose Ameda or Hollister. I chose Medela because it was simple
to use and it was a good efficient pump. I am sorry that their marketing skillls
have put them in violation of the code. But I have to recognize that not all
women breastfeed but want to feed their baby breastmilk and they should be
able to have good products available to them that work well.
I hope I haven't offended anyone but I feel we need to look at the whole
picture here. Medela has done some awesome work in promoting and
educating breastfeeding. I hope that this can be resolved.
Yours in lactation,
Theresa Klein, RN, IBCLC, RLC
