This ad is it, if ever there was one. I found this downright offensive, a
new low from a company whose move into unpalatable marketing practice has
put me right off them for a couple of years now. In thirty seconds, it
shows breastfeeding for less than two, and shows mother and baby together,
NOT breastfeeding for much longer. It concludes with the camera receding
from the mother and baby not breastfeeding, to focus on an array of feeding
bottles and pumping parts.
The voiceover says 'When you choose to breastfeed, you're doing what's best
for your baby. When you choose Medela breastfeeding products, you're doing
what's best for you both.'
In other words, breastfeeding without using Medela 'breastfeeding products'
is not the best for you as a mother.
Information on the site about types of pumps is to be found under 'product
selector' - to determine which pump is right for you. Determining whether
you need a pump at all, is not an option. Visitors to the site are asked
whether they are 'planning to breastfeed' or are 'already
breastfeeding/pumping'. Breastfeeding is equated with pumping. The
products shown are not breastfeeding products, they are pumping and
bottle-feeding products. Medela knows the difference between pumping and
breastfeeding, and they willfully confuse the issue to further their own
ends. I will as usual let them know what I think about this, and I will
expect their usual non-response.

I wonder if they are getting letters from women wondering what supermarket
the woman in the ad was in, that carried breastmilk in quart cartons.
Sheesh.
