Raising the status of pumping to keep a baby in human milk, is no bad thing.
However, raising the status of the notion that mothers can be, and
should do, everything - and that there is no loser as pumping is Good
Enough, is a bad thing.
Maternity pay, and keeping mothers and babies together, is the norm.
Pumping-for-employment culture further seeks to separate mothers and
babies, and imply that only substituting formula for human milk, is all
that's required - the baby and the mother can cope without each other
perfectly well. Whereas pumping-for-baby culture is about supporting a
baby when either the baby, or the mother is is a difficult position. I
know nothing of this politician, and therefore have no idea which
pumping culture is at work here. :-)
I think it's worth reminding everyone at this juncture, that lactnet is
an open list, and a word search on this politician's name, and
breastfeeding, will reveal your thoughts to any journalist doing a
search for a story on a newly announced running mate. The type of
journalist who may not write and ask your permission before lifting your
words and putting them in an article out of context.
Just a thought.
