Wow, that seems relatively strict! Here, babies are vax'd immediately with Hep B, so technically...
Maybe it's my old age showing its true colors, but I'm having a difficult time with seeing a number of newborns at the mall and Walmart, lately. True newborns, like 5-7 days of age.
Perhaps this new mandate is to give some reality to the situation that newborns really should have some protection for at least a little while. If a large number of newborns are not being breastfed, they are not getting any protection at all.
My psych nursing instructor tells all of her students that we should "never trust" a male who is not the father to be with young children. I really took offense at that, and confronted her. She suggested that so many young moms think nothing of leaving their children with a new boyfriend, she felt it was necessary to really impress upon them the need to know the person with whom they left their children - too many were taking the responsibility too lightly. Kind of a broad brush with which to paint, but for many, it was the first time they'd considered the thought.
And, I hate to be the Nervous Nellie, but, with the flu bug going around and infected/contagious people spreading before symptoms, I'm wondering about the safety of gatherings of new/pregnant moms and children (who seem to be especially susceptible), and especially newborns. The schools appear to be a massive breeding ground, I would hate for mothering groups to have an equal reputation.
Best wishes,
Sam Doak
