I can't remember the context, but I do remember reading recently that one of
the risk factors of a recommendation was 'disruption of mother/child
bonding'. This was considered a minor risk.
Even people who claim to 'support breastfeeding' can be clueless about the
importance of the overall relationship and interaction between mother and
baby (including things like the smell of mom's breast as one of the cues to
the baby).

Dear friends,
Perhaps it is too early on a Saturday morning that I don't grasp it, but why
should a mom wash her *breasts* before breastfeeding in order to prevent flu
colonization in her child? Is she hanging them out in front of flu infected
sneezers to get covered in virusses? Are healthcare professionals handling
them with unwashed hands after coughing and sneezing?
Warmly,

The AAP "advice" which included "wash the breast before feeds" also caught
my attention, though as Judy stated, I would much rather see that happen
than separating mom and baby unnecessarily. In posting the AAP link, I was
hoping to hear from someone that the CDC had updated their recommendations.
The whole notion of 'just pump the milk' in the first 48 hours is scary to
me when I spend so much time preaching the value of skin to skin contact and
early/frequent nursing! I do not like for non-lactation folks to be making
such an uniformed decision.
