Typing and nursing here so I will make it short...

It is my understanding that baby is colonized with mom's gut flora at birth
in the birth canal (poor colonization in the case of c-sections). If the
mothers have poor gut flora then the baby can also be lacking in the good
stuff. Maternal supplementation will help the mother's flora. It is also my
understanding that most bacteria, good or bad, do not transfer directly
through the milk. To supplement baby, mother can colonize her nipples with
good flora by applying probitoics to the nipples and then nursing or baby
can be directly supplemented.

There are others on this board much more knowledgeable than I, so please
chime in if I am missing something or am not correct!
